Basic commands used in Linux ( Compression and decompression )

In linux command line interface is the most important part. Apart from the GUI command line interface does a really good job. We can use command line interface to do many customizations in a linux environment. I hope to write as many as I can… Remember to remove the quotes in them before using .

1)   1) “bzip filename” – compresses or decompresses a file
2)    2)“tar cf targer.tar filename1 filename2 filename3” – Includes filename1, filename2, and filename3 ( as much as you like ) and make a zipped file target.tar
3)    3)“tar xf filename.tar” – Extracts files from a tar zipped file
4)    4)“tar czf target.tar.gz filename” – create a tar file with Gzip compression
5)    5)“tar xzf file.tar.gz” – extracts a tar gz zipped file
6)    6)“tar cjf target.tar.bz2 filename” –create a tar file using Bz2 compression
7)    7)“tar xjf file.tar.bz2” – Extracts a tar Bz2 compressed file
8)    8)“gzip filename” – Create compress file and rename it to filename.gz
9)    9)“gzip –d filename.gz” – Extracts filename.gz

Enough for today :)

Bumblebee got an update and Ironhide comes to real actions too!

In my last posts I told you to how we can configure Bumblebee in Linux for laptops which have Nvidia optimus enabled VGA cards. If you are not familiar with those I suggest you to go through my last post first. It will be easier to understand you what is going on.

As my last post I told you guys about what is IronHide is. It’s the same software like Bumblee for laptops which comes with ATI switchable graphics. But now the game has changed! Let’s see what are the changes has been made..

  1. Bumblebee got a PPA
  2. IronHide now supports for Nvidia optimus enabled cards too
  3. Support for Bumblebee will stopped so soon

Let’s see.. A PPA means a source at the linux archive. Simply it means that Bumblebee is now registered in Linux main sources. As an example, if you are an Ubuntu user, you can search and find the debian and tar zipped files of Bumblebee in http://archives.ubuntu.com/ which is the original destination of all the software sources are saved. So Bumblebee got PPA. That means you can download it as the way you download others so easily via terminal. No more copy and paste commands. Just once the PPA entered to the system it will work like a charm. Lets see how it works..
If you have previously installed bumblebee remove previous installations first. For that, run these commands one by one in your terminal window..

  1. chmod +x cleanup
  2. sudo ./cleanup

How to install –

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable
  2. sudo apt-get update
  3. sudo apt-get install bumblebee

Give the password when it’s required. How to usage instructions are in the last post too. As the names of script files and directory of scripts has not been changed those commands are working on this too. So refer them :)

So other news are that Bumblebee project is going to be paused and they have added the nvidia support to the ironhide project which meant to be the support for only ATI switchable graphics. So now on you can install Ironhide instead of Bumblebee and use it. And myself it will be the best thing to as it will be the most updated source with time. As Ironhide is going to get a serious improvement Bumblebee is doomed to extinction. They won’t remove it. But they will stop the support for Bumblebee as soon as they remove the tag “BETA” from IronHide’s name :D So switch to IronHide now! But make sure you do a search if your laptop is currently supported by Ironhide or not. If not keep the Bumblebee. Always remember it’s still in beta version!

See ya later :)

Installing and working with Bumblebee ( Configuring Linux laptops with nvidia GPU which comes with optimus technology )

At last with the support of Hybrid LinuxSupport web site I managed to shutdown the nvidia graphic card and enable the intel HD3000 graphics in linux ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal.  Note that this guide is only a “simplified form of installing bumblebee which was extracted from above main mage for use of novice linux users”.
There is a feature like same as optimus in ATI cards too. That can be settled with installing “IronHide”. I can’t tell anything about that as I got no ATI card in my laptop. So it’s the chance for someone else to check it and and inform us. Do a comment on your experiences. Thanks :D

What is Optimus technology ( for those who don’t know) –

Laptops are made for portability.n So always product companies try to get best results with the battery life. Intel HD gpu consumes a little power and nvidia gpu consumes a lot of power. So always working with the nvidia gpu makes battery life to be weaker. So what this optimus technology does is switching two gpus when they want.

Ex:-
Working on documents, excel sheets – changes gpu to intel HD3000
Gaming – changes gpu to nvidia
HD video – changes gpu to nvidia
Operating system – changes gpu to intel HD3000

Conflicts with Linux systems

This is a great technology indeed. But the issue is this technology is not very well working with Linux distributions. Nvidia officials have said they have no idea to develop this software to linux distributions too. So what will happen will be both gpus will work when you boot with linux. Result will be a small battery life. Some laptops wont boot even. In my laptop Acer 4750G I tried to install linux ubuntu 11.04 natty narwhal but it doesn’t  gave me the chance to boot even to the install page. It gave me only a black screen. I waited about 30 minutes but nothing happened. This has happened to lot of people who bought laptops with nvidia optimus technology. By the way this technology works with windows 7 like a charm. I managed to code C++ in CodeBlocks software about 5 hours and 30 minutes with lowered brightness.
I checked some linux distributions with this laptop and results are –
Ubuntu 11.04 natty narwhal – Didn’t boot even. But managed to work with installed via WUBI and survived C++ coding in standard g++ compiler via terminal for about 3 hours..

Ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx – Installed successfully. Initially gave me only a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. Then installed nvidia official linux driver and got the desired 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. ( its not a driver for optimus, but a driver to work that gpu with linux systems)

Linux arch ( kernel version – 3.0.3 ) – installed successfully.. when I installed gnome 3 gui in it all went to a black screen.  I think it can be corrected. As I’m not a genius in linux command line interface and linux arch I couldn’t get it worked yet. Big reason to worry. But I’ll do it in next week and update this post how to :)

I couldn’t check this with fedora or any other version as I couldn’t find any of them. If one of you have checked them with a nvidia optimus enabled computer please let us know. Do a comment explaining it. Thanks :)

With bumblebee software you can either get to work both gpus in optimus technology ( better for gaming ) or either you can turn off nvidia card. ( which saves power, great for any linux user)..  Let’s see how…

Installing  –

1)      sudo apt-get install git ( give the password and press enter )
3)      cd bumblebee/
4)      sudo ./install.sh
5)      Reboot

Some questions will be asked in the 4th step. So answer them and choose your laptop model wisely J

More configuration options.
By the default optimus is enabled and working with bumblebee. So if you are happy with that you don’t need these steps.

Deactivate nvidia gpu –
1)      Open the terminal
2)      Type without quotes  “sudo  /usr/local/bin/bumblebee-disablecard
3)       Exit the terminal and logoff. Log on again…

Activate nvidia gpu –
1)      Open the terminal
2)      Type without quotes “sudo /usr/local/bin/bumblebee-enablecard”
3)      Exit the terminal and logoff. Log on again

Manual re-configuration option –
1)      Open the terminal bumblebee-config

So that’s it. You will see a improvement of your battery life and less heat from now on as nvidia card is now not working always :)

These are some shots I got while i installing bumblebee.. enjoy :)

Nvidia GT540M GPU with Optimus technology! ( Stay away Linux and Mac users!!! )

Nvidia GT540M GPU with Optimus technology! ( Stay away Linux and Mac users!!! )

I recently bought an Acer aspire 4750G laptop and it came with a high performance nvidia GT540M GPU with the nvidia optimus technology. In my last post I described what is called as the nvidia optimus technology and what the use of it.

I described the issues with linux operating systems with this gpu. And I suggested you some answers too. I was able to disable my nvidia card. Even if I could disable it I’m currently working with a wubi installation of linux ubuntu 11.04 natty narwhal.  It doesn’t  give me a chance to boot in to installation page even. So I’m just saying that keep away from the notebooks with GT540M if you are a hardcore linux user.

This story is also common for mac users too. I mean for hackintosh computers. I was also looking to install mac os x lion in my new sub notebook. But unfortunately I found that there are some users who are complaining about display resolution conflicts and errors on installation procedure with these laptops which includes nvidia GT540M. I couldn’t check mac os x yet. But I suggest you to find some more information on hackingtosh support for this gpu adaptor.

If you are a hardcore gamer and a lovely windows user laptops with this gpu is best for you. But if you are a one who willing to make your day with linux or mac os I suggest you to find a different kind of gpu. What about intel HD3000? Laptops with 2nd generation laptops comes with this as this gpu is a internal in processor. Get a cheaper intel hd and you will be fine. If you are handy in tweaking, any laptop will suit you! See ya folks later :D

Compiling Objective C inside Linux Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal! ( Guide to Installing and working with GNUSTEP )

As a very Apple addicted person I always wanted to learn developing iOS and Mac apps. When I got my first iPod touch last december I started to love it's operating system called iOS. And I was amazed by the iMacs and Macbook Pros in Apple stores but I couldn't buy one yet. You know, money matters :(   Even though I don't have a Mac to do iOS developing I wanted to do those stuff so badly. Objective C is used for that and I wanted to learn it so badly. But I couldn't as I had my high school exams. But finally last night i figured it out :D So if you are a person just like me, who have endless willings to learn iOS and Mac programming without a mac this is the place :)

Objective C is used to make iOS and Mac apps. This language is derived from C language and this is a mid level object oriented programming language which was developed by Apple Inc. Prior experience with C++ or C will be a extra advantage. But it's not necessary. Objective C is currently compiled with xCode software in Mac Os X. But don't worry you can do it as this way too....   Okay let's get to work then.

You should have installed Linux ubuntu for this. I tried this via linux Ubuntu 11.04 - Natty Narwhal. But this should work with other versions too. Please kind enough to inform me if there's any problem with older versions. Well this guide consist of two steps. 1) Installing 2) Compiling ............. Let's do this :) Remember to enter your computer password whenever terminal requies it :D

Installing GNUSTEP in Ubuntu and getting it worked :)

1) Open the terminal. And enter below commands one by one. You should have a working internet connection dude :)

2) sudo apt-get -y install build-essential

3) sudo apt-get -y install gnustep

4) sudo apt-get install gobjc

5) sudo apt-get install gnustep-make

6) sudo apt-get install libgnustep-base-dev

Okay It's done.... Now you have successfully installed GNUSTEP in your computer. Well I know it took some long time to download it as it cost about 200MB :P But be happy you can run Objective C ! :D

Compiling a simple program with GNUSTEP !

1) Open the terminal.

2) Type gedit name.m

Info - You should use the .m extension to compile Objective C programmes. If you use .txt it will be frikkin useless. And use your desired name in the "name" field. And use it by changing everywhere hereafter in my codes.

3) After you hit ENTER key after typing last code a Gedit text editor will be opened. As "Home" directory is the default in terminal this will be saved in "Home" directory...

4) Then type this simple sample code in that text editor. And then hit the " Save " button and close it ;)

#import <Foundation/Foundation.h>
int main (int argc, const char * argv[])
{
NSAutoreleasePool * pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init];
NSLog (@"Objective C is great");
[pool drain];
return 0;
}

5) Now come back to the terminal and type-     . /usr/share/GNUstep/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh

info - You should enter this code everytime you start a new terminal window. I know this is a disadvantage. But it does the job ;)

6) gcc `gnustep-config --objc-flags` -lgnustep-base name.m -o name

info - Change the "name" field to the name of gedit file you created at first step!

7) ./name

info - After hitting enter button you will get a phrase in the terminal saying " Objective C is great :D "

Congratulations dude,,,, You have just made your first effort a success in Objective C :)

AND FOR LEARNING OBJECTIVE C I recommend you the book " PROGRAMMIN IN OBJECTIVE C 2.0 by Stephen G. Kochan " .. I downloaded a copy from thepiratebay.org But I don't remember the link for that torrent. If you couldn't find any book and need a one so badly, just ask me and I'll upload it. :)

Any questions??? Feel free to ask ;)

1) Open your gnome-terminal or konsole

2) For deactivating previous settings that made by user...

   sudo apt-get remove ffmpeg x264 libx264-dev

3) To get the dependencies and system stuff...

  sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install build-essential git-core checkinstall yasm texi2html \
    libfaac-dev libjack-jackd2-dev libmp3lame-dev libopencore-amrnb-dev \
    libopencore-amrwb-dev libsdl1.2-dev libtheora-dev libva-dev libvdpau-dev \
    libvorbis-dev libx11-dev libxfixes-dev libxvidcore-dev zlib1g-dev

4) To get x264 and installin it...

   cd

git clone git://git.videolan.org/x264

cd x264

./configure

make

sudo checkinstall --pkgname=x264 --pkgversion="3:$(./version.sh | \
    awk -F'[" ]' '/POINT/{print $4"+git"$5}')" --backup=no --deldoc=yes \
    --fstrans=no --default

5) To get FFmpeg....

   cd

git clone git://git.videolan.org/ffmpeg

cd ffmpeg

./configure --enable-gpl --enable-version3 --enable-nonfree --enable-postproc \
    --enable-libfaac --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libopencore-amrnb \
    --enable-libopencore-amrwb --enable-libtheora --enable-libvorbis \
    --enable-libx264 --enable-libxvid --enable-x11grab

make

sudo checkinstall --pkgname=ffmpeg --pkgversion="5:$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M)-git" --backup=no \
    --deldoc=yes --fstrans=no --default

hash x264 ffmpeg ffplay ffprobe

6) Now it's all done .. Now you can do your convertions via terminal codes.. I have mentioned them in a another post.. they are same for this distribution too..  If you are not ok with the terminal enter following code in terminal. It's a user friendly GUI for FFmpeg... Try it..

sudo apt-get install winff

Transforming Linux Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid to Mac OSX snow Leopard

Okay... Today we are about to transform linux ubuntu 10.04 Lucid in to apple mac OSX snow leopard. As for this moment this moment this transformation pack is only available to Lucid 10.04. I mean the stable one. There is an non stable alpha vesion for 10.10 too. So I got to install this on my ubuntu 10.04 Lucid.

This will make your ubuntu desktop transform into a Mac OSX. It's not only
theme. It installs some other softwares too.

Macbuntu-10.04 theme based on GTK Leopard
Macbuntu-10.04-Icons based on Mac4Lin Faenza Icons
Macbuntu-10.04-Cursors based on Mac4Lin Cursors
Mac OSX backgrounds
Mac OSX fonts
Firefox, Thunderbird and Chrome themes
Global Menu
Docky
Ubuntu-Tweak,
Cheese
Compiz Extras
Metacity

First thing is to download the package files

wget https://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/macbuntu/macbuntu-10.04/v2.2/Macbuntu-10.04.tar.gz -O /tmp/Macbuntu-10.04.tar.gz

Then run these too in the terminal :D

tar xzvf /tmp/Macbuntu-10.04.tar.gz -C /tmp

cd /tmp/Macbuntu-10.04/

./install.sh

After installing macbuntu it will automatically direct you to another installation. After installing those theme will be changed. But don't stop. Reboot the PC and get amazed :D :D :D :D
